WHAM! secure the official Christmas Number One for the second year running

Last Christmas is the official Christmas Number One of 2024, 40 years after its original release.

They’ve done it once again! WHAM! have scored the official Christmas Number One spot this year, with Last Christmas. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley first released the song back in 1984. They desperately hoped for it to reach number one that Christmas and it lost out to Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?.

Last year Last Christmas finally hit the number one spot, 39 years since its release! Since it has hit number one at Christmas again this year, it has made history as the first song ever to reach Number One at Christmas for two consecutive years. What an amazing achievement!

Last week marked 40 years since the release of Last Christmas and it was commemorated by the BBC showcasing a dedicated documentary. WHAM!: Last Christmas Unwrapped tells the story of how George and Andrew wrote the treasured festive tune. Not only does it talk through the creation of the song but it shows some behind-the-scenes from the iconic video, and also features Shirlie Kemp and Pepsi (the original WHAM! backing singers). It is available to watch on BBC iPlayer now, watch the trailer here.

It is an incredibly special Christmas song and it is fantastic to see that it has reached the Number One spot again. Congratulations, WHAM! We will, of course, be blasting Last Christmas all this week to celebrate. You can listen here too!
